Mikhail Bakhtin (1895-1975) is one of the preeminent figures in twentieth-century philosophical thought. Art and Answerability contains three of his early essays from the years following the Russian Revolution, when Bakhtin and other intellectuals eagerly participated in the debates.

Biography. Bakhtin was born in Orel, Russia, outside of Moscow, to an old family of the nobility.His father was the manager of a bank and worked in several cities. For this reason Bakhtin spent his early childhood years in Orel, Vilnius and then Odessa where, in 1913, he allegedly joined the historical and philological faculty at the local university.
