SACRAMENTO, Calif.—Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian and Senator Scott Wilk are holding an essay contest for the 2017 California Armenian Legislative Caucus’ commemoration of the Armenian Genocide. California high school students in 9th through 12th grade are invited to participate in the essay contest to increase greater awareness of the Armenian Genocide on its anniversary.

California has a long history of divesting from countries that violate human rights, South Africa (apartheid policy), Sudan (Darfur genocide), and Iran (international terrorism, human rights violations). A divestment from Turkish bonds over Turkey’s denial of the Armenian Genocide.

Each year the Armenian Education Center awards a scholarship to the winner of their essay contest. These essay questions help students to generate awareness and build a general understanding of the Armenian Genocide. This scholarship is available to 9-12 grade students.

The Armenian Genocide Committee is pleased to announce the Annual Armenian Genocide Essay competition, funded by the Hagopian Family Foundation. Since 2008 this competition has recognized and awarded Michigan middle and high school students who have written a successful essay explaining the relationship of the Armenian Genocide of 1915 to 1923 to other genocides of the 20th century.

The 105th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide will take place at the center of the universe in Times Square, New York, on Sunday, April 26. Politicians, academics and artists will honor the victims of the Armenian Genocide while advancing the fight towards global recognition.
